EVE The Market Categories4

Mining Ships

While there are other ships that give you bonuses on mining and you can use any ship that has turret hardpoints, there are also specialized mining ships. These are the Mining Barges and the T2 version Exhumers.
Mining Barges can fit strip miner modules, which are more effective than mining lasers. However, they are very slow and hardly have any tank.
Exhumers however have better resistances than Barges and also get a better mining output.

Transporting ships

There are three variations here: Industrials, Transport Ships and Freighters.
Industrials don't take a lot of skills and are fairly cheap but can transport enough for daily use.
Transport Ships are T2 industrials which have better resistances and tanking abilities. There is also a variation that has a bonus to warp strength, which is the same has having two Warp Core Stabilizers fitted but it has a smaller cargo hold.
Freighters are large industrial ships with an enormous cargo hold. However, their tanking abilities aren't good. They also can only transport items from a station to another station but not pick up containers in space.

Others

The Rookie Ship isn't on the market since you just get one whenever you dock at any station you don't have another ship at. Rookie Ships aren't very powerful but good enough to earn some ISK to get into a frigate.
Shuttles are cheap and fairly fast ships with a tiny cargohold and hardly any tanking abilities. They can't fit any modules and are only good for picking up ships and travelling.

Skills

Here you find all sorts of skills, which won't be explained further here, since there is a separate skill guide.
To learn more about skills look into "Skills".

Starbase Structures

Starbase Structures are needed for POS (Player Owned Stations), which are towers combined with other modules that get built on moons. Their main part is the Control Tower.

Trade Goods

This category contains various goods for different purposes. This guide will not follow the order that the goods are listed at on the market, but will instead attempt to categorise the goods according to purpose.
Many goods serve as mission objectives or as items which are requested by agents in exchange for loyalty point rewards. Insignias, Criminal Dog Tags, Criminal Evidence and Nexus Chips belong in this category, but also many of the other trade goods.
Political Paraphernalia are part of an event called the "Gallente Elections" and Starbase Charters are needed when a POS (Player Owned Station) gets built in NPC owned space. The items that are listed under Research, Manufacturing and Copying are needed for T2 blueprints.

Some items are illegal in some areas, so check the legality tab before undocking because the penalties can be harsh.
